Company overview
Piezo Parts started out as a components manufacturer that made sensors using quartz crystals. In common applications, they are used as sensors to measure film thickness in the manufacture of optical components such as OLED displays and camera lenses, and Piezo Parts' such products are highly regarded both in Japan and overseas for their excellent quality.
As the shift to IoT advances, the company's quartz crystal sensors, which connect the internet to various objects, are being used in every corner of our lives and have become indispensable products.
Mr. Hayakawa, the second-generation president of the company, enthusiastically states: "We would like to provide the world with products that are useful to people through the development and manufacture of products using quartz crystals, rather than just being a parts manufacturer."
The company is in the midst of a period of change and is working together with overseas universities to promote R&D for the development of new products. In terms of human resources, the company accepts specialists with expertise in electrical engineering as well as mechanical engineering, regardless of nationality or age, and aims to be a global company that incorporates new ideas into its products and that can be active on the world stage.
Mr. Yeo (in Malaysia), who works as an engineer in the Engineering Department, says: "The atmosphere of the company is laid-back, but the work itself is quite exciting. When I was in university, I considered becoming a researcher, but the more I learned about manufacturing, the more interesting it became, and now I am totally absorbed with my work. The small size of the company allows me to challenge myself and grow in areas other than my specialty. I am very happy when something I have developed takes shape."
Work-life balance initiatives
Since the company's establishment, there has been a philosophy of valuing work-life balance, which the company calls "priority to child-rearing."
The company allows employees to work only morning or afternoon shifts or shorter hours, making it easy for them to work according to their personal life plans. The company also actively supports communication outside of the workplace.President Hayakawa states: "Teamwork is important for developing new products. Outside activities are a good opportunity for us to learn more about each other's strengths that we don't realize at work."At the company, badminton is a particularly popular activity. Once a week after work, employees and their families get together and have fun playing badminton. This activity originally began when Mr. Yeo invited colleagues to play.Mr. Yeo states: "I started out wanting to continue playing badminton, which has been a hobby of mine since I was a student, but now I find it a pleasure to play with my colleagues. After playing, we all go out to eat together and discuss recent events, get advice on cooking for ourselves, and this helps to facilitate communication at work."The company also offers company-sponsored dinners and an overseas company trip once every five years.Human resource development initiatives
The company's human resources development system is based on the belief that "being independent and self-reliant, and acting on one's own initiative, are important."
President Hayakawa states: "In order to create new products and markets, you need to be able to find and overcome challenges on your own. We are conscious of an internal environment that facilitates communication in order to draw out that independence."
In order to develop independence, the company has introduced a self-assessment system. Twice a year, employees conduct meetings with the president to learn how to think and act on their own to achieve their goals. In order to improve any knowledge or skills that are lacking, employees participate in external training and study sessions of their own choice, and each employee has opportunities to share knowledge in his or her area of expertise.
Mr. Yeo adds: "When I wanted to learn the latest technology, I was allowed to participate in an outside training program, which was a great learning experience. In my daily work, I am in an environment where I can talk with my seniors until we are satisfied, and I learn a lot from them as well. I also appreciate the fact that they follow up on my shortcomings."
Message from our top executive
Representative Director Yusuke Hayakawa
We are engaged in business with the desire to represent Japanese technology so that we do not betray the expectations of all foreign workers that come to Japan with high hopes for such technology.
We support their work and personal life in Tokyo so that the workers, as well as their families in their home countries, can feel reassured. Our products have potential over the next 10 or 20 years and even beyond. We are waiting for some new colleagues, regardless of nationality, with a positive attitude and a desire to try anything new!
Message from foreign talent
Electrical and Electronics/Eng Lok Yeo(Malaysia)
The good thing about small and medium-sized companies is that they are able to proceed with the work that they want to do with a sense of speed. I can feel my growth every day.
In terms of living, Tokyo is a really comfortable city to live in. There is no trash on the streets, and the cleanliness is unparalleled. Tokyo is a big city, but here you can feel both the urban and rural atmospheres, and I also recommend going jogging in nature. By all means, give Tokyo a try!
