GUPPY's Co., Ltd. develops hybrid IT in healthcare business with the mission of "Make the world happy with good ideas." Currently, the company has two services working in tandem. One is a human resources service specializing in medical care, nursing care and welfare. President Hida says: "In 2000, we launched this field's first website in Japan as a pioneer, and it has grown into a top-class website with 5 million hits per year. Even now, 20 years later, the scope of our services is expanding every day, including job information magazines, collaborative job fairs, and the sending out of job application forms on behalf of clients." The other service is a healthcare service that utilizes health management apps, with a beginning that sprung out of a casual chat between the president and an employee. A month later, the business was launched, and now the health app has over 16 additional features (for managing one's weight, exercise, food, alcohol, sleep, etc.). The number of users has also expanded to include not only individuals but also various industries, including companies, local governments, health checkup institutions, and health insurance associations. Mr. Mandeep, an engineer from Nepal, says: "Every day, I enjoy developing new services with my colleagues, and every day is exciting."
Work-life balance initiatives
In addition to promoting flexible work styles, such as telework and flextime systems, the company has devised a "Fun Workplace Declaration" to ensure that employees can work in a fulfilling environment.
President Hida says: "I want our employees to be energetic and to enjoy both their work and private lives to the fullest." President Hida's unique initiatives include a health promotion support system, a sports support system, and a system that allows employees to take four consecutive days off once every three months. The health promotion support system is particularly popular. An Apple Watch is provided to each employee, and the health points operated by the company and the Apple Watch can actually be used by staff to proactively manage their health. Mr. Mandeep, the engineer from Nepal, has a particular favorite, i.e., the subsidies for the cost of dinners for employees. He says: "I have more opportunities to get to know my superiors, who I don't usually have a chance to talk to at work, and I feel more comfortable asking them for advice when I have a problem at work. I've heard that there were a lot of interesting events outside of work before COVID-19, and I'm looking forward to attending them."
Human resource development initiatives
As the company develops new services on a daily basis, it is essential to improve the skills of each and every employee in tandem with coming up with new ideas. For this reason, the company provides an excellent "learning environment" that includes support systems for acquiring qualifications, external training, and purchasing books, all at the company's expense. On the other hand, President Hida says: "I will tell you where the water is, but it's up to you to decide whether you want to drink." And he rejects the idea of the company providing a one-way training program. Rather, President Hida says: "It is important to create an environment in which each person's interests and motivation are respected to the maximum extent possible and in which they can freely make their own declarations." For this reason, the company also arranges monthly one-on-one meetings with supervisors and encourages employees to declare their own plans for improving their skills to others. Mr. Mandeep, the engineer from Nepal, happily says: "My supervisor is very helpful in advising me on what I need to do to improve my skills. You can also purchase books recommended by colleagues at the company's expense, and I can participate in external training programs that interest me. When I first joined the company, I couldn't do anything, but recently I've been able to develop applications on my own. I feel that I'm growing, and most of all, I'm happy to be of service to the company."
